Dan 
has a long history of developing and directing new work, including projects by Dominic Finocchiaro, Alice Tuan, Julie Marie Myatt, Martin Zimmerman, Laura Jacqmin, Julian Sheppard, Donald Freed, Quincy Long,  Jim Leonard Jr, Jacquelyn Reingold, Ari Roth, Lea Floden, Jacqueline Wright, stand up comic Sarah Silverman, Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City) and British “Olivier Award” recipient, Debbie Tucker Green.  

He was a regular participant at the Audrey Skirball-Kenis Theatre Projects new play development program in Los Angeles, and Dan has been in residence at Seven Devils Playwrights Conference for the past six seasons.

Mr. Bonnell was Co-Artistic Director of Ensemble Studio Theatre-Los Angeles from 2006 to 2008 and was the Artistic Director of Arcade (a workspace for the theatre and media) from 1995 to 2001.  His work has been produced in Los Angeles by Center Theatre Group, The Road, Pacific Resident Theatre, Ensemble Studio Theatre-LA, Arcade, Open Fist, the Colony, the Falcon, the Matrix, the Met, Cornerstone, [Inside] @ The Ford, Echo Theatre Company, ASK Theater Projects, Highways, Moving Arts, HBO Workspace and Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. 

Mr. Bonnell is  the recipient of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Directing Award, the LA Weekly Directing Award, the NAACP Directing Award, the GLAAD Media Award, and has been nominated for Theater Communications Group “Alan Schneider Award”.  Prior to LA, Dan was a Resident Director at Circle Repertory Company in NYC and staged plays for LORT companies including: Long Wharf, the Asolo, Alliance Theater and Pioneer Theater Company.

Internationally, Mr. Bonnell's work has been seen at the Bronfman Center in Montreal, Theatre Les Dechargeurs in Paris and the National Youth Theatre in Hanoi, Vietnam.  

In academia, Dan has been a Guest Artist at CalArts, a Visiting Assistant Professor at UCLA, a Lecturer at UC Riverside, a Guest Artist at Denison University, and an Adjunct Professor (Directing) at the University of Southern California.
